Police shot and killed Cameron D. Lupton, 28, of Malta, after he had stabbed his father Carl, 57, and stepmother Charlotte Lupton, 67, earlier today.

Police were on the phone with Charlotte Lupton when a dispatcher heard a disturbance at her home at 1020 Quail Run, according to a report from the DeKalb Police Department. DeKalb police and an NIU officer investigated and found Cameron Lupton attacking his family members with a knife, and an officer shot and killed Cameron Lupton, according to the report.

Carl and Charlotte Lupton were transported to Kishwaukee Community Hospital and suffered multiple stab wounds. Police Chief Gene Lowery said they were in stable condition and no other injuries were reported.

Lowery said it is not yet known why Cameron Lupton attacked his father and stepmother. According to the report, Carl and Charlotte Lupton are cooperating with the investigation.

Illinois State Police "have responded to conduct an independent investigation regarding the use of deadly force in this incident," according to a report from the DeKalb Police Department. Lowery said two police officers who were involved have been placed on paid leave, and the leave could last anywhere from a few days to several weeks.

Lowery said a preliminary investigation showed officers' actions "saved two lives today."
