The Marquette alumnus spent the previous two seasons with the Huskies as an assistant coach under former head coach Ricardo Patton.
"Todd comes highly recommended from numerous coaches throughout the country," Montgomery said in a press release. "Having been a former player at a championship level at Marquette, he is able to relate well to our student-athletes. Todd has a tremendous work ethic and is very knowledgeable about the game. He has outstanding recruiting ties locally and throughout the Midwest that are an asset to our program and I am very pleased to have Todd staying on at Northern Illinois."
Townsend and recently-hired assistant coach Jon Borovich are the only two coaches Montgomery has brought onto his first-year staff so far.
"I am excited to have the opportunity to remain at NIU and be a part of coach Montgomery's staff," Townsend said in a press release. "I have enjoyed my time in DeKalb, and I am thankful for the opportunity to stay. I look forward to working with coach Montgomery and being a part of building a championship program here at Northern Illinois."
Townsend's name may ring a few bells for college basketball fans, as he was apart of the Marquette team that made a run to the Final Four in 2003, which also featured NBA All-Star Dwyane Wade.
