Mihelich resigns post for ‘personal reasons’

NIU’s Promotions and Marketing Director Mary Mihelich has resigned her post at the university.

Mihelich has worked for the NIU athletic department since 1988. Mihelich said she is leaving NIU to take a job at the DeKalb Chronicle newspaper as an advertising sales representative.

“I have several reasons (for leaving),” said Mihelich, who declined to list the reasons because they were “personal.”

“I’m not looking to get back into college athletics,” said Mihelich, who added that her departure from NIU was amicable.

As promotions director, she oversaw sponsorships, game promotions and marketing for NIU athletics.

Mihelich came to NIU from Minnesota, where she worked with current NIU Athletic Director Gerald O’Dell.

Her 1990-91 salary as promotions and marketing director was $40,008. She said she will assume her duties at the Chronicle on Jan. 1.

“We’ve come a long way at NIU,” Mihelich said. “I’ve been here for four years, and I’m proud of the things we’ve accomplished.”

“I hate to see her go, she’s done a great job,” said Keith Hackett, NIU associate athletic director.

Hackett said the athletic department has not yet set a timetable for finding her replacement.
