Lambrecht discusses school priorities

The race is heating up for the DeKalb School Board, as candidate Susan Lambrecht states her goals.
“I want to improve the quality of education in the DeKalb schools,” Lambrecht said.
“Some of the issues that I am concerned with are the current class sizes, space available, test scores and spending,” she said.
Spending priorities need to be examined, more teachers need to be provided, more classrooms or more class space needs to be provided, better materials and better programs and curricula needs to be added, she said.
“In trying to get rid of the deficit, art classes in the elementary schools were cut as well as vocal music classes in the middle schools and junior high,” she said.
The students in the DeKalb schools have below average test scores in all areas, she said.
“I am really curious about why the language arts classes are 24 minutes less per day. We currently have the shortest school day that Illinois law allows,” Lambrecht said.
Lambrecht is president of the PTA at Little John Elementary School, South Second Street. She also is the chairperson of several committees in the PTA including being the chair of the fall fund-raiser and co-chair of membership.
She received her bachelor’s degree from Viviterbo College in Lacrosse, Wis.
She has lived in the community for five years. She has one son in the fourth grade.
