DeKALB – NIU senior guard Darweshi Hunter has committed to Miami University Monday according to Verbal Commits.

Hunter is the second NIU men’s basketball player to transfer this season. Senior guard Kaleb Thornton – who transferred to the University of Akron – was the first.

Hunter played the last two seasons at NIU, finishing with career averages of 6.4 PPG (points per game) and 2.8 RPG (rebounds per game) while shooting 36.1% from three-point range. Hunter appeared in 60 games for the Huskies, making 18 starts.

In the 2022-23 season, Hunter played in 30 games, making eight starts. Hunter averaged a career high 9.0 PPG on a career best 46.5% shooting from the field. He also averaged a career high 3.0 RPG. Hunter’s 42.1% shooting from three-point range led the Huskies and ranked seventh in the MAC.

Hunter will team up with redshirt junior guard Morgan Safford at Miami. Safford was top 15 in the MAC in scoring in the 2022-23 season – averaging 15.4 PPG. Hunter’s three-point shooting ability will help the RedHawks’ offense, who ranked sixth in three-point shooting in the conference last season.

Hunter helped NIU reach the 2023 MAC Tournament for the first time since the 2019-20 season. The Huskies finished the 2022-23 season 13-19 overall and 9-9 in the MAC.
