Maintain student power in OCR

The Student Affairs Office is putting the Office of Campus Recreation under the microscope. Lets’ hope the outcome ensures the amount student control that exists now.

An ad hoc task force has been formed to investigate the decade-old SA Recreation Committee-OCR agreement. Many issues will be debated, but the main sticking point is how search committees will be formed.

Last spring’s search for a new OCR director ended bitterly. Although the choice of Juliette Moore was favored by all, the imposition of an administrative staff majority on the search committee rankled SARC members who felt control of the student-funded service was being taken away from them.

Fortunately, the students involved have insisted upon obtaining unanimous approval for any task force recommendation, offsetting the group’s administrative majority. And an attempt to scrap the existing agreement, and invite wholesale revisions, was declared invalid by SA President Preston Came.

The OCR and the student body will be well served if the students involved continue to work as well as they have to preserve student control of OCR.
