NIU greeks carry out Homecoming traditions

NIU greeks continued their tradition of participating in Homecoming this year.

Mike Pedone is the second consecutive Sigma Chi member to be chosen Homecoming King.

Pedone, Sigma Chi treasurer and junior marketing major with a 3.9 GPA, said he feels honored because NIU students, not a committee, elected him.

1990 Homecoming King John Griffin was the fraternity pledge dad of the 1991 King, Pedone said.

In other Homecoming events, the fraternities and sororities paired up to compete against each other, Homecoming Coordinator Sandra Clawson said.

Pi Kappa Alpha placed first in fraternity Paint the Town. They also came in first for canoeing with sorority Sigma Sigma Sigma.

Alpha Omicron Pi placed first in sorority Paint the Town for their artwork at Eduardo’s Mexican Restaurant, 214 E. Lincoln Hwy.

Delta Phi Epsilon placed first in the sorority Banner Contest.

Sigma Kappa placed first in Volleyball with Sigma Chi and first in softball with Delta Upsilon, she said.

“The house really pulled together,” Sigma Kappa President Mary Keating said. “We’re really proud of everyone.”

A cartoon drawn by Charlie Passut placed Sigma Nu at first place in the fraternity Banner contest and second in fraternity Paint the Town, said President and Homecoming Court member John Butler.

Sigma Lambda Beta placed first in Yell Like Hell with sorority Delta Gamma.

Sigma Lambda Beta Vice-President Mario Ortiz said the fraternity feels “ecstatic” because they are the smallest fraternity house and this is their first year participating in Homecoming events.

The fraternity and sorority incorporated the Huskies fight song and did dive rolls during their Yell Like Hell routine, he said.
