CAB granted funding

Campus Activities Board’s Homecoming Committee will receive additional money from the Student Association following an affirmative vote at Sunday’s SA meeting.

Tracy Johns, CAB Homecoming Committee entertainment chairman, and Sandra Clawson, CAB Homecoming coordinator, presented the senate with CAB’s request for $750 supplemental funding. The funding is needed to sponsor two popular Chicago disc jockeys to work the second annual homecoming dance.

According to Johns, the fee for WBBM FM DJs Julian Perez and Tim Shommer is $1,500 for four hours.

The senate approved Sen. Dave Iver’s motion that the SA grant supplemental funding pending that CAB receives the additional half of the fee from somewhere else.

SA Treasurer Joe Kolerich said CAB brought the funding request to the SA because they are not funded a lot of money. “The Homecoming Committee has a total budget of $7,677 this year.”

Kolerich explained how organizations usually go to CAB mid-level for funding before approaching the SA. “They (CAB mid-level) are not given very much money,” he said.

“(CAB mid-level) is money that the SA sets aside to fund organizations that don’t have a big budget,” Clawson said.

Organizations request SA supplemental funding because an unforeseen event has occurred they cannot cover in their budget, Kolerich said. “The SA has $40,000 for this purpose,” he said.

Rebecca Bahr, SA public relations adviser, said she feels the $750 is “a lot of money, but it’s worth it.”

“If CAB wants to have a successful dance and attract a lot of people, getting big name DJs is the way to do it,” Bahr said. “The senate apparently thinks it’s a good idea.”

Sen. Jennifer Lenart said she promotes the dance because it is “a good way to provide entertainment to students without alcohol.”

Sen. Julie Lardino said, “I feel this is a good idea. The students will benefit from having the dance … it will bring the students closer together.”
