NIU fraternities serenade into fall social calender

Students wondering where the singing is coming from this week should look over at Greek Row.

The fraternities serenaded the sororities last night and on Sunday to set up their fall social calendar, said Greek Adviser Dawn Sturma.

The sororities will serenade the fraternities of their choice tonight and tomorrow night, Sturma said.

Whoever the women serenade will determine which fraternities they will pair up with for social mixers, she said.

Panhellenic Council President Christina Hulting said this event was done in the past to determine which fraternities and sororities would pair up for homecoming events. However, since there are more fraternities than sororities, a lottery system is now used and sororities split into two teams.

The men try to outdo each other by doing something creative, such as changing the words to popular songs, she said.

“Just to see 80 guys singing is quite a show,” Hulting said.

Delta Zeta President Stacy Bonruzd said some of the fraternity men dressed up and also performed routines.

Sigma Nu dressed formally and played instruments as they sang “Knocking on Heaven’s Door” and “Piano Man”, said social chairman of the fraternity and guitarist Greg Snook.
