NIU student writes dietary bestseller

By Grant Miller

An NIU senior dietary major is informing Korea about eating right and staying healthy in her book, which has made the bestseller list in Korea.

Hannah Mitter, who is originally from Korea, recently wrote a book titled “I Never Thought I Would Be Sick.” Although it has yet to be published in the U.S., it was released in Korea, where it became a national bestseller.

“The book deals with my sickness of low blood sugar from eating wrong,” Mitter said. “It goes from the early symptoms of the illness, to the treatment and to the recovery.”

Mitter discovered she had low blood sugar during her pregnancy in 1987. She said the main cause of her sickness was that she was not eating breakfast or healthy meals.

“In my book I try to tell people the importance of eating a good breakfast and not skipping any meals,” Mitter said. “I also stress that it is important not to take in large amounts of caffeine like coffee, pop, cigarettes and chocolate.”

Mitter said when she was growing up, even though Korea was a poor country then, people ate healthy food. But now that Korea has money, the people are not eating as well, she said.

Mitter said the publishers thought Koreans should read what she had written, so they decided to publish her book.

“Once it was published, I went to the NBC station in Seoul (Korea) and appeared on one of their major talk shows,” she said. “After that I was on four magazine covers, two newspapers, and three radio shows. People recognized me on the street.”

Witter said she firmly believes that “success is not selling books, but success is changing hearts.”
