Theatre jaunt to Canada planned

By Jean Dobrzynski

Theatre lovers can start saving their money to make a run for the border this November to view some theatrical treasures.

NIU is sponsoring its fifth annual trip to Stratford, Canada, home of the world-famous theatre festival, for a taste of Shakespeare and other notable plays on Nov. 1 through Nov. 4.

World_class productions of Hamlet, Much Ado About Nothing and Carousel will be performed.

The town is what makes the trip unique, said Deborah Booth, coordinator for the College of Continuing Education.

“Stratford is a tiny town smaller than DeKalb,” she said. “There are three theatres there and everything—even the restaurants you eat and drink in—revolve around a theatrical theme.”

“People who love theatre can see it in DeKalb or see it in Chicago, but it’s not really a concentration like it is in this town,” she said.

Booth said the trip is usually sponsored in the summer, but this year it was decided that an additional trip in the fall would allow for a more diverse group.

“In the past it usually has been a mix of teachers and students within a wide range,” she said. “But this trip in the fall should be mostly students.”

The cost for the trip is $395 for a single room and $355 for a shared room. A pre_trip seminar is scheduled for Tuesday, Oct. 29.

Transportation will be provided by NIU vans and tickets for the plays and accommodations are arranged in advance by NIU.

The sign_up deadline is Sept. 17 and several spaces are still available. Interested people can contact Booth at 753_6913 or in Room 103 in Adams Hall.
