Red Cross offers first aid, CPR

The DeKalb County chapter of the American Red Cross is offering Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation and first aid classes to students and local residents beginning Sept. 9.

Director Kathy Glascock said the chapter now offers two different CPR classes and one first aid class.

The adult CPR class instructs how to perform CPR on an adult, rescue breathing and clear airway obstructions (how to assist a choking victim), Glascock said.

A community CPR class also is available. This is similar to the adult CPR class, but it also includes infant and child CPR, she said.

The community CPR class will meet on both Saturday, Oct. 12, and Saturday, Oct. 19, from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. The class fee is $25, Glascock said.

“The standard first aid class instructs on basic emergency action principles and rescues,” she said. The class fee is $25 and it will meet on both Saturday, Sept. 21 and Saturday, Sept. 28, from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m.

Glascock said there has been a recent increase in the demand for the CPR and first aid classes. The chapter’s classes are ongoing and can be scheduled to meet those demands, she said.

The class instructors are Red Cross volunteers from the DeKalb area that are authorized certified instructors, Glascock said.

Glascock said pre-registration for the classes is required. Registration and information are available at the chapter office, 155 N. Third St., DeKalb. Interested residents also can call 756-7339.
