Illinois unemployment rate on the rise
July 23, 1991
DeKalb County’s unemployment rate is lower than the average in Illinois.
According to Labor Market Information Notes, DeKalb County had an unemployment rate of 5.7 percent for the month of June.
Illinois’ unemployment rate was 7.3 percent.
This rate “may change” due to adjustments made at the beginning of every month when the previous months rates come in, said Sue Guil from the city of DeKalb economic department.
The 5.7 percent rate is higher than last month’s average of 4.9 percent and higher than June of last year, Guil said. However, the unemployment rate is actually down from April.
“This unemployment rate usually fluctuates from a high of 7 percent to a low of 3.7 percent,” Guil said.
The June increase is attributed to construction in the community not being as strong as last year, she said.
According to an Associated Press Release, statewide, the seasonally unadjusted unemployment rate rose 1.4 percent from 5.9 percent to 7.3 percent.
The jobless rate rose last month in 13 metropolitan areas, Illinois officials said. The rise in the unemployment rate is attributed to schools closing for the summer and recent graduates to the unemployment ranks, said Loleta Didrickson, director of the Illinois Department of Employment Security.
Aurora-Elgin had the highest increase in unemployment. The city’s jobless rate rose 1.8 percent from 5.6 percent to 7.4 percent.
The Decatur metropolitan area continued to have the highest unemployment rate at 8.9 percent, rising 1.3 percent from last month. Champaign-Urbana-Rantoul had the lowest unemployment rate at 4.6 percent.
