Students surveyed on bus service

“Keep the buses!” was the overall feeling of NIU students surveyed Monday.

An informal survey of about 35 students was performed Monday by The Northern Star to get their opinions on Huskie Line summer service.

Students were asked if they knew Huskie buses were running during the summer, if they had used them yet this summer and if they felt summer service should continue.

Sixty-seven percent of the students surveyed knew the buses were running over the summer, while only 15 percent of them have actually used the service. However, 77 percent of those surveyed feel summer service should continue.

Some students did express their displeasure with the current service. NIU student Joe Cassidy said, “I don’t use them because they come by so infrequently that you have to go to class 45 minutes early or 15 minutes late.”

Another student said she felt the summer service should continue, but the buses should run more often.

Pat Sanchez, Student Association Mass Transit Board member, said this summer is the first summer the buses have run in eight years. “This will be a trial to see whether or not the service will continue over the summer from now on,” he said.

Most of the students surveyed felt although they had not used the buses, the service should continue. One student said, “I personally don’t need them (the buses), but I’m sure there are people who do use them and couldn’t get by without them.”

The Huskie Line is running two buses on four routes. The number one bus covers the regular weekend Routes 3 and 4, while the number two bus will cover the regular Routes 2 and 7.
