Cake given to honor Shakespeare

NIU students were tested on their knowledge of William Shakespeare on Friday in honor of the playwright’s 427th birthday.

The English honors society, Sigma Tau Delta, asked students trivia questions from the Shakespeare play of their choice and were given cake in exchange for correct answers.

Sigma Tau Delta Co-treasurer Robin Horowitz said the annual event is something Sigma Tau Delta gives back to the university while making students aware of a literary figure.

“We are trying to raise cultural and academic awareness by offering a bit of knowledge about Shakespeare with every piece of cake,” Sigma Tau Delta Treasurer-elect Allyson Batts said.

Sigma Tau Delta was not the only organization offering treats on Friday. The Alumni Association was handing out free ice-cream as a promotion of Springfest.

Alumni Association director Ellingsworth Webb said they want students to be aware that the association exists for them to join even before graduation.

The association also held a free drawing for two tickets to the showing of Les Miserables at the Auditorium Theatre in Chicago, Webb said.
