Benefit to promote hunger awareness

Rather than sleeping through yet another Saturday morning, students could get out of bed and participate in the “7th Annual Hunger Cleanup.”

The cleanup of the DeKalb area will run from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, with registration beginning at 9 a.m. at the Newman Catholic Student Center, 512 Normal Road.

Many NIU organizations will join to raise money for fighting hunger and poverty in the area and across the world, marking the fourth year of involvement.

NIU co-coordinator Mark Wray said organizers are hoping for a good response.

“Considering all of the groups who have committed to participate and the people who will come out Saturday, we are expecting at least 250 people, which would be a bigger turnout than last year,” Wray said.

“Half of the money raised will be distributed among local hunger and homeless programs, with the other half going to fighting poverty in such places as Kenya, Guata, Sierra Leone and the Philippines,” Wray said.

Workers will clean up at places like Safe Passage, the DeKalb Park District and around campus. Following the event, pizza and pop will be served at the Newman Center.

“The whole purpose of the cleanup is to promote awareness of the hunger problem and also to provide a service to the community,” Wray said.

The event is sponsored by the National Student Campaign against Hunger and the Homeless and cosponsored by the NIU Campaign Against Hunger, the Newman Center, Circle K and Kappa Sigma.
