Building to open for show

The NIU community is invited to take a look at the new home of NIU’s University Resources for Women this afternoon and Wednesday.

The open house will run from 2 to 5 p.m. in its new location at 105 Normal Road, across from the Psychology/Mathematics Building.

“It is a good opportunity for people to see our new facilities and find out more about the services that we provide,” said graduate assistant Paula Realini of the University Resources for Women.

The resources for women’s center previously was located at the Wirtz House, which was demolished. While the house at the new location was being renovated, the offices temporarily were held in Altgeld Hall.

Some of the new features of the house includes reading rooms, meeting rooms and new offices for the staff. Director Sharon Howard said that officials were holding the open house “so the community can see our new building and its different features.”

The University Resources for Women also have expanded its services to fill the needs of more women in the NIU community.

“We previously offered services to primarily returning women students,” Realini said. “We now are offering our services to all women at this university, including faculty, staff and students.”

Although it wasn’t planned, the open house has ended up coinciding with Women’s Heritage Month, which runs through the month of March.
