Frat. might impeach Came

By Greg Rivara

Preston Came might be ousted by his political science fraternity, but he says he doesn’t think it’s true.

Came, the front-runner in the Student Association presidential race, is a treasurer for Phi Sigma Zeta. The 10-member executive board voted Tuesday to present the 50-member group with Came’s impeachment on April 3, said President Andri Franke.

“I doubt the story, needless to say,” Came said. “I don’t believe it is true.”

But it is, Franke said.

Came is under fire because he has missed too many meetings, a violation of the group’s constitution, Franke said. “Some people expressed displeasure in the fact that Preston wasn’t doing as much as he should be doing,” she said.

“I haven’t heard about it,” Came said.

Fraternity Community Affairs Officer Ken Feinstein offered the impeachment. But he declined to comment because “it wasn’t appropriate.”

Came was not there, but Franke said he knew about the meeting.

“As of right now, he is not impeached,” Franke said. “The full membership has not voted on that at this time.”

Franke said the board talked about Came’s absences as an inappropriate signal to send to the full membership because every member is required to attend meetings.

The group meets twice a month. The executive board meets twice a month. Each meeting lasts about an hour. Came’s presence is required at all meetings, Franke said.

Came said he has missed some meetings because he was campaigning. “I made this abundantly clear to this organization,” he said. He did not say how many meetings he missed.

Franke wasn’t sure how many meetings Came missed, either.

However, Franke said Came spoke with her about running for SA president “about a month ago.” Franke said she told him that he was still expected at the meetings. She said Came was told nobody would think any less of him if he stepped down.

Franke said she doesn’t know how the vote will turn out. “I’m kind of hoping” Came won’t be impeached, she said, adding he is a good treasurer.

A two-thirds vote by active members is needed for Came to be impeached, Franke said. Came took over the position in April.
