NIU men’s tennis (1-1) bounced back from Friday’s loss against Purdue University with a 4-3 win against the Indiana University Indianapolis Jaguars (0-1) on Saturday at the West Indy Racquet Club.
The Huskies won three out of six singles matches and two of three doubles contests for the win.
Huskie team captains junior Iker Gaztambide Arrastia and sophomore Saul Berdullas said in a statement VIA text message, “Great day to be a Huskie. We fought really hard to get the victory. Proud of the effort everyone gave and the energy was unmatched once again. Let’s keep pushing.”
Gaztambide Arrastia and junior Federico Scotuzzi secured a 6-4 win, while freshman Chiao Bo Suo Nan and junior Iker Dellien Velasco clinched their doubles match with the same score.
Jaguar seniors Kamil Kozerski and Noah Viste defeated NIU sophomore Sam Klein and Berdullas with a 6-3 score.
In singles play, Gaztambide Arrastia led the charge with a commanding 6-2, 6-3 win over Kozerski.
Berdullas continued his strong start with a 6-3, 7-6 triumph against Viste.
Dellien Velasco clinched the team’s win against Jaguar freshman Vincent Nauta in 6-3, 6-2 sets.
The match also saw some close losses as Bo Suo Nan battled hard against Jags senior Steven Paz ultimately falling in a three-set contest.
After a competitive three-set battle, Jags junior Eli Mercer emerged victorious with a comeback win, defeating Scotuzzi 4-6, 6-3, 6-2.
Klein was defeated by Jags freshman Pumiphat Sukkho with a final score of 6-1, 6-3.
