NIU wrestling No. 31-ranked 157-pound redshirt sophomore Landen Johnson earned this week’s Mid-American Conference West Wrestler of the Week after claiming an overtime victory over a nationally ranked opponent Friday.
Johnson matched up against previously No. 25-ranked 157-pound University at Buffalo redshirt junior Kaleb Burgess.
Leaving the third period of the match tied 5-5, Johnson snagged the sudden 8-5 victory with a takedown shortly into overtime. The victory is Johnson’s third-straight in the MAC and earned Johnson a place in the national rankings.
Furthermore, the win helped the Huskies defeat Buffalo by a score of 28-8 overall and move into first place in the MAC West.
Johnson and the Huskies round out their out of conference schedule at 7:30 p.m. Friday on the road against California Polytechnic State University in San Luis Obispo, California. The duel will be live streamed on X, with live stats available through TrackWrestling
