Halted by Monday’s poor weather conditions, NIU men’s golf finished the University of Arizona-hosted Thunderbirds Intercollegiate in 12th place.
In a field of 13 teams, NIU competed against four nationally ranked opponents, including the No. 10 ranked University of Utah.
Kicking off the tournament on Monday, the Huskies got off to a hot start. NIU finished one-under par in the first round after tallying 287 strokes and exited the first round in seventh place.
Unfortunately for NIU, bad weather hit and the tournament was postponed amid the closing half of a faulty second round. The Huskies completed the second round Tuesday, posting a 22-over par score of 310 strokes in and falling in the leaderboard as a result.
The Huskies’ success diminished further in the third round, leaving the tournament with a 35-over par, 323 stroke showing in the final round – their worst of the season.
Senior Ben Sluzas led the pack, tying for 40th place. Sluzas kicked off the tournament with his strongest score after tallying 69 strokes in the first round.
Sluzas proceeded to regress in each of the following rounds. Sluzas tallied 76 strokes in the second round before posting 82 strokes in the third round.
Freshman Patrick Raupp was the Huskies second golfer at the intercollegiate, finishing in a tie for 46th place. After posting his tournament-best score of 71 in the first round, Raupp’s success faltered in the final two rounds.
Raupp logged 76 strokes in the second round before rounding out the tournament with a score of 82 in the third round.
Senior Felix Krammer was the Huskies’ third golfer, finishing tied for 58th place. Krammer opened the tournament with 75 strokes in the first round before posting 76 strokes in the second round and 81 in the third.
