In Shahrzad Motallebi’s “Code to Cast” art exhibition, Montallebi combines ancient metalsmithing traditions with modern technology to create 11 pieces that are influenced by her Iranian heritage.
The exhibition was held from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesday in the Annette and Jerry Johns Gallery of the Art Building with the “Code to Cast” exhibit serving as part of Motallebi’s thesis project.
Motallebi spoke about the meaning of her art exhibit and what to expect when seeing her work.
“I mean, all the designs are like, rooted from geometrical shape, which is in my background, as I’m coming from Iran,” Motallebi said. “All those like geometrical patterns on the mosques, or, like everywhere, it’s very traditional, and I think that’s kind of in my blog, and you can see it is projected in my work, and everything.”
Motallebi created her pieces using visual coding and algorithm-based design software to create generative forms, which she then casts in silver alongside pieces printed with clear resin.
The black color of printed resin contrasts perfectly with the shiny sterling silver on some of the pieces.
The 11 pieces from Motallebi’s exhibit each exuded a feeling of elegance and beauty with each one being more and more stunning than the last one. One of the pieces that stood out was the “Archform Collection (selected)” which had these beautiful rings each sporting a stunning gemstone that sat on a bed of clear resin.
Ann Van Dijk, the associate professor of art history, came to the exhibit to support her student and see the art she designed.
“Well, I am a professor in the School of Art Design, and I’m also the Graduate Programs Coordinator. So the student, MFA student, who made all this beautiful work is one that I’ve had in art history courses.” Van Dijk said.
The exhibition will be open from 10 a.m to 4 p.m available to everyone until Friday.
