Candidates face petition deadline

By Michelle Landrum

Residents of DeKalb wards 1, 3, 5 and 7 have until 5 p.m. Tuesday to pick up and return petitions to run for alderman.

Petitions may be picked up at the DeKalb City Clerk’s office, located in the Municipal Building, 200 S. Fourth St., or the DeKalb County Clerk’s office, in the Sycamore Courthouse, 110 E. Sycamore St.

So far, only the 3rd Ward has more than one filing, said Deputy City Clerk Wanda Croom. Susannah “Sukey” Blake, Gary L. Wiggins and Dan E. Seymour have filed. All will run as independents.

Incumbent Bessie Chronopoulos, Democrat, is the lone candidate filed in the 5th Ward.

In the largely student-populated 1st Ward, Mark Sussinger is the only candidate who has returned a petition. He filed as a Republican. The current alderman is Amy Polzin, who was appointed late last year.

No one has returned applications for the 7th Ward, another essentially student ward. Jeff Monroe is currently serving as 7th Ward alderman.

The city election is on April 2.
