After falling in the Mid-American Conference championship match to the University at Buffalo, NIU women’s tennis has been invited to compete in the Universal Tennis Rating Sports National Invitational Tournament Championship.
This is the first time in history that NIU women’s tennis will compete in a national postseason tournament, with matches scheduled from May 7 through May 9 in Rome, Georgia.
Along with the Huskies, the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, Appalachian State University, the University of North Alabama, Washington State University, North Texas University, Middle Tennessee State University and Saint Mary’s College of California also received bids.
The Huskies enter the single-elimination tournament with a 22-7 record on the season, the most wins in program history.
“A season like this and getting to finish with a postseason tournament raises our expectations,” said NIU women’s tennis head coach Eric Burns via NIU Athletics. “It’s not enough now to go and compete in the MAC (Tournament). We want to win the conference and get into postseason tournaments. That’s becoming the standard. This year has raised the bar, which is a great step and a positive step for our program. We’re going to go down and try to compete as hard as we can.”
The Huskies open tournament play on May 7, facing Washington State University in the quarterfinals. Tournament matches will be streamed on PlaySight and live scoring will be updated on IonCourt.
