Gymnasts sustain perfect mark

“You can’t touch this” women’s gymnastic team.

Once again, the Huskies lived up to that reputation as NIU upped its record to a perfect 7-0 mark Saturday. Two more school records were broken, including the team-scoring mark, after defeating University of Iowa and University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh in the home triangular.

Coach Bobbie Cesarek’s crew broke the week-old school scoring record by posting a 187.90 team score. U of I followed suit with 184.15 while UWO fell in last with 175.70. The event marked the ninth time in two years the Huskies have seen the school mark fall.

NIU also scored 47.40 as a team on the balance beam for the second new record. “We were wonderful on the beam,” Cesarek said. “Dayna (Lia) got in a little trouble, but Laurie (Vitallo) filled in and Sheryl Kurowski and Nickie Pedicini just did a great job.”

Cesarek felt the team started out a little slow on the vault (46.10) but blamed some of the mistakes on the amount of practice time lost last week due to injuries and illnesses. For the most part, the lack of practice was not evident in the remainder of the meet.

NIU placed first in four individual events with four different Huskies in each. Vicki Thimgan earned first place honors in the floor exercise with a 9.65, and Lori Lebo’s 9.40 won the vaulting event. Kurowki took first in the parallel bars with a 9.65 and Pedicini was the top competitor on the balance beam with a 9.65. Pedicini’s efforts put her in first for the all-around competition with a score of 37.40.

Despite NIU’s overwhelming success so far this season, Cesarek is not surprised.

“I believe I am a good judge of talent and knew our capabilities were there this year,” Cesarek said. “The team even senses that we haven’t peaked yet and that’s what keeps them motivated.

“The records are really nice to have, but our capabilities are so much more beyond that,” Cesarek added. “Even though I was disappointed with our performance on vault, I know it is only a matter of working more on our weaknesses.”

NIU’s assault on the record books continues Friday in Ames, Iowa when the Huskies take on the Iowa State Cyclones in a 7:30 p.m. meet.
