Sororities remembering soldiers in gulf

By Janet Webster

Many NIU sororities are taking the time to send letters and gifts to the troops in the Persian Gulf.

Alpha Delta Pi began correspondence last semester whereas most sororities began last week. Before Christmas the women put together a “care package” for the troops containing cookies, Kool-aid and other sweets to help brighten their holidays. They also plan on writing letters to the forces.

“If only for one minute we can take their minds off of the war it will be worth it,” said Margie Preciado of Alpha Phi. Preciado said she has a good friend stationed in the Gulf and the Alpha Phis are writing to his battalion.

“We hope to get many return letters from the soldiers because we were all so excited to write,” Preciado added.

Preciado said the letters are cheerful and show their support. Alpha Phi has started a philanthropy, sending boutonniers to the troops, and many of the sororities are taking part in this also.

Sigma Kappa also has begun writing letters to those overseas. The women are distributing addresses of friends and relatives to each other and are sending “good wishes.”

“We have put a lot of time into our letters,” said Lisa Trapani. “We are decorating the letters and envelopes and hope to cheer up the soldiers.”

Delta Gamma also is taking time out to write. “We have been writing to the battalions of girls’ friends and relatives,” said MaryAnn Murray. They also have sent care packages, have painted their anchor red, white and blue, and wear yellow ribbons.
