‘Rowdy’ crowd cheers mugger

University Police said Wednesday that about 30 people “harassed” a pizza delivery person Sunday while she was being mugged at Lincoln Hall.

But the victim claims a crowd of more than 150 people cheered her attacker as he hit her. While no one will confirm the crowd’s size, a Lincoln Hall security guard maintains the “rowdy” crowd encouraged the attacker.

NIU Judicial Officer Larry Bolles said his office does not tolerate this kind of behavior on campus. Aaron Beard, 20, the alleged attacker charged with battery and theft, is not an NIU student and will be banned from campus, Bolles said.

If he is found on campus again, he will be charged with trespass, Bolles said.

However, Beard’s actions could spell trouble for the Lincoln Hall crowd. People who encourage others to break rules are violating the student judicial code, Bolles said.

“We won’t let people stay here who intimidate people,” he said.

The crowd also called the victim names and threw pizza at her before UPs arrived, the victim said.

Sheryl Mullis, area coordinator for Lincoln and Douglas halls, could not confirm the victim’s story. Mullis did say, however, that large groups sometimes gather in the Lincoln Hall lobby.
