Holidays force city services change

The city of DeKalb announced various services and schedule changes Friday due to the approaching holiday season.

Garbage collection regularly scheduled on Thursday will take place on Friday, Nov. 23. DeKalb Public Works Director Ronald Naylor said the DeKalb County Disposal is adjusting their schedule around Thanksgiving.

Holiday decorations are going up around the city and should be ready by Friday, said Tom Burch, Downtown DeKalb Association president. The merchants’ group also is opening a Santa Claus House for kids during the season and sponsoring a movie at the Egyptian Theatre, Saturday, Nov. 24, he said.

Most of the money is coming from DeKalb Tax Increment Financing funds, Burch said.

The DeKalb Fire Department is asking residents to “adopt” a fire hydrant in the winter. The department asks that people select a hydrant and clear off the snow around it to make it easier for motorists and firemen to see it.

Assistant Chief James Jones said, “All we want is the snow shoveled away. No painting or planting bushes in the summer.”

The fire department also will begin the fourth annual “Red Wreath Program.” Beginning this Friday, a Christmas wreath with red lights will be placed in front of fire station No. 1. Any structure fire or holiday-related medical emergency will be marked by replacing a red wreath bulb with a white one.

Jones said the wreath’s purpose is “to make citizens aware that the holiday season is a very dangerous time of the year.”

The Fire Department hopes there will be no white lights this year, Jones said. Last year there were one or two white lights, he said.
