ISU investigated;unknown reasons

Illinois State University in Bloomington is under investigation by the state police and an internal audit.

ISU President Thomas Wallace and attorney Joseph Goleash confirmed Tuesday night that a probe by the Division of Internal Investigation of State Police in Springfield is under way, the Bloomington Pantagraph reports.

ISU, NIU and Sangamon State University in Springfield are governed by the Board of Regents.

Wallace and Goleash would not comment or indicate what the internal audit investigation is targeting.

However, individuals within the university who are either aware of the investigations or were questioned told The Pantagraph that records of projects done through the physical plant have been pulled.

They said the questions indicated investigators are interested in the financial dealings of the physical plant. Money spent on outside contracts and the billing and payments for those projects are being checked.

Goleash declined to comment on the nature of the investigation, noting the university’s policy on discussing ongoing cases. He referred questions to Board of Regents’ Attorney Carol Fines.

Fines also confirmed there is an investigation “with the cooperation and the knowledge of the university and the Board.”

Neither Goleash, Fines or Board Chancellor Roderick Groves would give additional details. Fines referred other questions to the state police.

While administrators would not say how long the investigation has been going on, the external investigation began early last month. Employees said they were unsure of how long the internal check has been going on or which investigation began first.

The Regents are meeting in Springfield today, but are not expected to discuss the situation.
