University Police are charging a Chicago man with battery and theft after he mugged a pizza delivery person Saturday night at Lincoln Hall.

Aaron M. Beard, 20, Chicago, was arrested after he allegedly stole a $5.42 Rosati’s Pizza, 120 N. Annie Glidden Road, from a female NIU student and Rosati’s employee who was delivering the food to Lincoln Hall, police said.

At about 2:30 a.m. Sunday, the delivery person walked into Lincoln Hall and called the person who ordered the pizza from the lobby phone, Rosati’s management said.

Beard allegedly grabbed the delivery person from behind and struck her several times with his fist and elbow, police said. Lincoln Hall staff and security staff witnessed the incident police said.

The UPs got the man’s description and later arrested him in Douglas Hall.

The man who ordered the pizza apologized to the delivery person and said he felt the incident was his fault, a restaurant spokesman said.

Restaurant management said they usually do not have problems like this, but said that they think the public tends to harrass female delivery personnel.

The restaurant management plans to buy mace and walkie-talkies for its delivery people to carry when they deliver.

The victim, described by management as quiet and responsible, will not deliver pizzas anymore, but will work in the restaurant.
