Council undecided on election

The governing board of NIU’s sororities still cannot decide whether to elect its executives on a rotational system.

A possible amendment to the Panhellenic Council constitution would elect executive members according to the order their houses were established on the NIU campus.

The amendment was brought up again by Alpha Phi representative Jodi Pressendo at Tuesday night’s meeting. She first brought up the issue Oct. 2.

After discussion, the council tabled the issue. The sororities’ faculty advisers would have been uncomfortable with a vote Tuesday night, said Dawn Sturma, adviser for Greek Activities in the University Programming and Activities office.

The advisers are not sure the chapters want the rotational system, Sturma said.

“The National Panhellenic Council works on a rotational system and they made their recommendations to us,” said Vice President Darcy Dial.

Chapters who want the system said its advantages include giving each house equal representation and letting each house groom members for offices.

However, opponents of the system said it could allow unqualified members on the council or prevent qualified members from getting offices.

In other business, members made nominations for executives who will serve through October, 1991, but no nominations were made for the office of membership development.

PHC President Karen Wilkenson said she thought it’s sad that no one was nominated out of nine chapters. “That is why the rotational system is being suggested,” she said.

Elections will be held at the Oct. 30 meeting.
