Greeks to keep secrets

Fraternities and sororities do not have to worry because their secret rituals are not going to be revealed to anyone.

The confusion about keeping initiation rituals secret began when a section in the Student Assoication recognition packet asked for appointments with “those organizations that have secret rituals and other confidential information.”

“They just need to stop by if they need clarification,” said SA Vice President Tanya Smith.

Smith said she attempted to clear up the confusion in a Sept. 15 memo sent to greek organizations, many of which felt they were targeted by the policies.

In the memo Smith said she wants to contact those organizations “for their rights and allowable provisions to be clarified.”

Smith further clarified the SA’s position by stating greek letter organizations can black out the confidential information in the constitution and bylaws they must submit to the SA.

“I can’t know whether there are problems unless people come and talk to me,” Smith said.

“The national chapters regulate the rituals,” said Panhellenic Council Vice President Darcy Dial. “It’s not beneficial for anyone else to know about them.”

No fraternity members mentioned the memo or the confusion at the Interfraternity Council meeting Tuesday night.

“It seems like member fraternities are pretty happy,” said IFC President Robert Martin.

“The memo clarifies misconceptions greeks had about the SA recognition,” Martin said. “Some may still be uncertain because of communication breakdowns between student organizations.”
