New school year busy for CAB

The 1990/91 academic year is going to be a busy one for the Campus Activities Board.

CAB, located in the basement of the Holmes Student Center, is the student-run organization that plans some of the recreational activities for NIU students.

“This is really going to be a great year,” said CAB president Wendy Reid.

Some events similar to last year’s planned for 1990/91 include Parent’s Weekend, Homecoming, Lil‘ Sibs Weekend, Northern Nightlife and Springfest, said Diane Gautcher, CAB office manager.

CAB will also sponsor movies four nights a week this year, Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Last year, movies were shown only Friday through Sunday. Reid said this will offer students another night to see a movie, since many students seem to go out on Thursdays.

Those shown on Thursdays and Saturdays will cost $1.00 and those on Fridays and Sundays will cost $1.50, Gautcher said.

Students interested in being members of CAB committees will have the chance to attend “CAB call-out meetings” September 11, 12 and 13 at 7 p.m. in the HSC Capital Room, Reid said.

Gina Reeves, CAB Coffeehouse Coordinator, said students can also learn about CAB at Friday Fest, August 24. Coffeehouse is a series of concerts held on Wednesday nights at the Diversions Lounge at the HSC.

“I’m really excited about this fall,” Reeves said. “I think the Coffeehouse series will be good; I’ve heard some of the tapes.”

Reid said, “I’m looking forward to working with the whole university and meeting the students’ needs. We want to provide a diversified program.”

Gautcher said the new CAB committee coordinators seem to be knowledgeable about what they’re doing. The coordinators and their committees make all the decisions about what will be done with the money, she said.

“They seem excited about their committees and what they’re programming, especially since everything they do is volunteer work,” she said.

“There’s a lot of creative talent here. They really do a super job,” she said.
