Guides assist freshmen

NIU freshmen may find campus life confesing at first, but most students should be able to make the adjustment quickly with the help of their NI Guides.

NI Guides are continuing NIU students who volunteer to write letters to new students and help them move into the residence halls, Matt Miller, student coordinator for New Student Welcome Days said.

This year’s 350 NI Guides also helped plan residence hall and campus events to welcome students to NIU, Miller said.

NI Guide Laura Sterling, a senior math major, said when she was a guade two years ago she thought it was a well-organized program that helped parents and new students become more relaxed.

This year Sterling said she plans to take heb three new students on a tour, go out to eat with them and help them find their books.

“I enjoy meeting the people; it’s a lot of fun,” she said.

“When I came up to Northern I had a hard time adjusting, so if I can make it easier for others, that would make me feel great,” said NI Guide Lory Durkiewicz, a junior communications major.

Durkiewicz said she will help 15 new students but said she does not think it will be difficult because “once they meet each other they won’t need as much of my help.”

Training sessions for NI Guides will be held before New Student Welcome Days, she said. Guides need to learn communication skills, the ability to draw out shy people and familiarity with the campus, she said.
