For the first time, the Golden Image Awards will recognize someone outside NIU for its highest honor.

Father George Clements, of the Holy Angels Elementary School in Chicago, will receive the Golden Sphinx award, said Roland Perez, Alpha Phi Alpha public relations co-chairman.

Clements is known for his tough policy against gangs and for asking shop owners that sell drug paraphernalia to stop.

“I think (his presence) will be highly motivating,” Perez said. “Everyone can relate to Father Clements.”

The fraternity will hold its third annual Golden Image Awards ceremony Friday at 8 p.m. in the Holmes Student Center’s Duke Ellington Ballroom.

Tickets cost $4 a person or $7 a couple and are being sold in DuSable Hall today and Wednesday.

The awards are “geared toward minorities,” said Robert Grimes, treasurer. “We try to honor individuals that aid minorities,” he said.

John Quilico, public relations chairman, said it is important to recognize individuals and organizations for their achievements so “they continue to be motivated and excel.”

Male and female awards will be given for outstanding athlete, most artistically talented and representatives for best Greek image.

Organization awards include best entertainment and most memorable event.

“It’s good to be recognized for efforts,” said nominee Robert Cordero. An Alpha Psi Lambda member, Cordero is nominated for best Greek image.

Other awards include the Dolby award for helping create a positive racial climate and one for best adviser to a minority organization.
