Earth Week is only a start

You too can help save the world.

This seems to be the theme for Earth Week, along with the 20th Anniversary of Earth Day (this Sunday). OK, so about 25,000 students think about recycling for a week. This is good.

Awareness of a problem, such as the destruction of our planet, is the first step to solving a problem. And, saving the environment is in vogue these days. Unfortunately, it is also a long way from the solution.

One week hardly seems enough time to save the world, especially considering global warming, the greenhouse effect and landfills, to name a few.

Cooperation, not just with fellow students, but with NIU administrators and DeKalb city officials is one step to making an impact on the environment.

The university and city should work together in a combined effort to recycle. The university, and students in particular, because their fees fund the Student Association Recycling Center, and the city could SAVE money with a combined effort to recycle (not to mention saving the environment).

The impact might seem small compared to the rest of the world, but if one city can pool together its population to make a change, then what’s to stop any other city from doing the same? All it takes is conscious thought to get the ball rolling.

Save a planet. Just think, constantly.
