Student group presents Africa Day

Students can experience the ideas and culture of Africa on Tuesday’s second annual Africa Day.

“I hope it will be an enlightening experience to the rest of the campus,” said Dins Pupuma, African Student Union president. Events will take place throughout the day, Pupuma said.

A student panel discussion by African students will take place at 2 p.m. in Gabel Hall’s Caven Auditorium, said ASU member Wilma Jones. The discussion will include issues such as women and culture, education and political economics, she said.

A “Taste of Africa” will take place at the Wesley Foundation at 4:30 p.m. Jones said. Food from different regions in Africa will be presented. For $2 admission, food is “all you can eat,” she said.

Van Amos, Black Student Union program coordinator, said foods such as jolof rice, chapoti, curry chicken, stuffed doughnuts and Kenyan coffee will be offered. Amos said all students are welcome to attend. “I know students will be educated, as well as entertained and fed,” he said.

Pupuma said a representative from South Africa’s African National Congress will speak in Cole 100 at 8:45 p.m. The representative will speak on “The ANC Model for Democratic Rule in South Africa.”
