Accused to enter plea to charges

The man accused of killing a DeKalb woman in 1988 will enter a plea next week.

Brett M. Hooghkirk, 18, formerly of DeKalb, is being held without bond at the DeKalb County Jail after being charged with three counts of first degree murder, aggravated criminal sexual assault, aggravated arson and concealing a homocide in Lisa M. Garretson’s death.

DeKalb County Associate Judge William Engel ordered Hooghkirk’s arraignment for Tuesday, when he will enter a plea to the charges.

Attorney William Brady, Hooghkirk’s counsel, declined to answer questions about the case.

Assistant State’s Attorney David Day said the three charges of first degree murder against Hooghkirk are “just alternative ways of pleading murder,” and declined further comment because the case is pending.

Hooghkirk was arrested by the DeKalb Police Department Jan. 22 after a 17-month investigation. Hooghkirk allegedly raped and murdered Garretson, and then set fire to her body and her 1010 State St. apartment to hide the crime.

Hooghkirk, who graduated from DeKalb High School in 1989, lived within six blocks of Garretson’s apartment.

Court documents state that “hair in the victim’s hand, fire at the scene, a contusion to the victim’s head and other physical evidence” corroborate with Hooghkirk’s statements.

Cocaine and marijuana were found in Garretson’s apartment.

Garretson worked full-time at Cardinal Glass, 1651 State St., and part-time as a waitress at Kishwaukee Country Club. Garretson earned a bachelor’s degree in elementary education from NIU in 1984.
