Computers stolen; no leads as of yet

Two pieces of computer equipment valued at $9,000 were stolen from NIU’s Pscyhology-Mathemathics Building more than two weeks ago, but University Police and local Crime Stoppers have no leads in the case.

An IBM PS2 model A computer and monitor were stolen sometime between Jan. 12 and Jan. 15, UPs said. However, there were no signs of forced entry and the office was locked, said Rodney Angotti, chairman of the computer science department.

“It was sitting on a shelf so it could be transferred to Du Page County,” said UP Sgt. Ralph Taylor. “I guess someone thought they needed it more than Du Page County.”

But Angotti said the equipment was not supposed to be sent to Du Page County. The computer was stored to make space for other equipment which was to be transferred to Du Page.

The stolen computer is the essential part—called the “file server”—of a large PC installation planned for May 15, Angotti said. The department probably will be forced to purchase a new unit to complete the May networking project, he said.

Taylor said there are no leads in the case although it is still under investigation. However, the UPs have alerted area computer stores to watch for the equipment, he said.
