SA to discuss issue at later date

Talk of a possible impeachment of the Student Association’s president was silenced at Sunday’s senate meeting, although it will come up next week.

Sen. James Mertes began discussion on the impeachment of President Huda Scheidelman, but was told by SA President Pro Tem Thomas Gary to hold any further comments until the next senate meeting.

Gary said the bylaws state “discussion will not take place until 10 days after the respondent receives the petition.” Mertes and Sen. Galvin Kennedy gave Scheidelman an impeachment petition Feb. 2.

Kennedy said impeachment was brought up to “see exactly how everyone feels” rather than spending more time discussing it during the impeachment trial.

Comments on the possible impeachment ceased, but Mertes pointed out a Feb. 9 Northern Star article which reported that Scheidelman had not been attending President John La Tourette’s Fee Study Committee meetings.

“I’m well aware of the issues and I’ve been reading the budgets ever since they’ve been prepared,” Scheidelman said.

She added she will attend the next committee meeting because there will be voting and it does not conflict with her classes.

In other business, Scheidelman spoke about conflicting policies held by NIU and the national Reserve Officer Training Corps which prohibits homosexuals. She said the university encourages the ROTC’s scholarship program, which follows Army policy prohibiting gays from military service.

The senate also heard Scheidelman’s report on the Holmes Student Center space study committee. She said she thinks the Boston architectural consultants who visited NIU will recommend an addition to the student center.

The addition will meet the space needs of the Career Planning and Placement center, Student Counseling and Development center, a commuter lounge, student organizations and University Programming and Activities, she said.
