Student concerns top IFC agenda

The InterFraternity Council has planned a semester of activities to inform students of fraternity and sorority concerns at NIU.

Activities planned for this semester are Greek Week, a philanthropy, a non-alcoholic greek social and greek Rush, said Steve Sliga, former vice president for IFC activities. The sororities and fraternities want to “let our voice be known,” Sliga said.

One IFC focus this semester is unifying the IFC and Black Greek Council by including the BGC in programming, Sliga said.

BGC President Mileau Hudson said a Black Greek Council subcommittee is working on this semester’s activities, but no definite plans have been set in conjunction with the IFC.

T.J. Schmitz, executive director of Tau Kappa Upsilon, will speak Wednesday at the King Memorial Commons on leadership techniques. The leadership program hopefully will increase the awareness of sorority and fraternity issues such as hazing, Sliga said.

A Feb. 21 presentation of “Hazing on Trial” by Dave Westol, executive director of Xeta Chi, is an effort to increase awareness of hazing circumstances, Sliga said. Westol will present an “emotional plea” of hazing through his experiences, Sliga said.

Greek Week, planned to promote the greek system, will include a greek skit, faculty reception and a speaker on a topic yet to be chosen, Sliga said. In 1988, the IFC sponsored a blood drive, but this semester’s philanthropy is still under discussion.
