Student skirmish reported

By Mark McGowan

About 30 students were involved in a skirmish outside of Grant Towers South Friday night, but scattered before the University Police could settle the matter, UPs said Monday.

UP Lt. Ron Williams said the UPs were able to find only a few witnesses from the fight. But the students were unable to identify their attackers, Williams said.

The fight allegedly began when about eight people approached a group of about 25 people “playing” outside Grant Tower, Williams said. There were “unkind” remarks made, Williams said, and the fight broke out. The students split up when the UPs arrived.

GTS Resident Assistant Thomas Gary, who was working at the front desk at the time of the incident, said someone entered the hall and told him to call the police. “I didn’t see anything,” Gary said. Douglas Hall security also responded.

Only one individual was injured during the fight—a small cut on the nose—but refused treatment, Williams said.

The incident is still under investigation.
