Student arrested for fire

An NIU student was arrested by University Police for starting a fire Monday night on the seventh floor of Stevenson Towers South B-tower.

Neal A. Sacheck, 18, 726 Stevenson South, was charged with criminal damage after confessing to starting the fire, police said.

Sacheck allegedly lit a bulletin board on fire, causing about $200 damage, police said. The fire did not create enough heat to set off the building’s heat-sensitive alarms.

Jim Rooney, Stevenson Towers South area director, said he and other hall officials were notified by a floor resident that the bulletin board was burning, but the fire was extinguished by the time they got to the floor.

Because of the fire’s suspicious nature, the UPs and local fire department authorities questioned residents and gained Sacheck’s confession.

Sacheck faces state criminal charges and disciplinary action from NIU’s Judicial Office. Rooney said he does not know if Sacheck must pay for the damage.

The bulletin board probably will be replaced, Rooney said. The wall on which the board hung will be cleaned and might need to be painted.
