NIU Campus Parking Office to relocate

By Denis Tagler

The NIU Campus Parking Office will move to a new address at 121 Normal Road because of inadequate space in the security building next to the University Health Services.

The parking office currently shares space with the Department of Public Safety; the Duramad House, a residential home bought by NIU in June of 1989, will give the space needed for the office.

Patricia Hewitt, associate vice president of Business and Operations said the move “will be a real boost in space” since the parking office will be the only occupant of the remodeled house.

Hewitt said the “target date” for the campus parking office to move to its new headquarters will be sometime this June.

The NIU Physical Plant will use that time to get the house ready for an office-type setting by taking out old fixtures and making the electrical and plumbing systems more modern, she said.

Physical plant carpenters will need to work on the house’s uneven floor and replace the current leaky roof when the weather gets nice, Hewitt said.

Physical plant employees also will be replacing the kitchen with two new bathrooms, she said.

The house will be made more accessible to the disabled by widening the doorways and sidewalks, Hewitt said.

Campus Parking Manager Helen Nodurft said there will be spaces available for customers of her office in the new parking lot next to the house. This lot is known as the “thumb” by physical plant employees because of its small size.

The lot will have at least one parking space for the disabled, Nodurft said.
