“Either/Orchestra” jazz band rocked DeKalb with their unique, instrum mental production

While the annual un-official Halloween Parade of Youth stumbled its way down the sidewalks of this quiet East-Side neighborhood of DeKalb, Tuesday night brought the return of one of the most creativity-influenced jazz bands to the area for the second time this year.

The Either/Orchestra, an eleven-piece instrumental production boardering on complete symphonic quality, filed into the sparsely-filled Espacio Cinco building ready to enjoy performing for a soon-to-be enjoyed crowd.

Espacio Cinco, 1021 E. State, is a nearly ancient and well-worn product of Finnish descendents. This auditorium, with a high balcony and towering ceiling, was once used as the local town meeting hall for various social and political functions.

The Boston-based Either/Orchestra, providing their own social function, turned an apparent dissapointing turn-out into a personal, one-on-one jam session featuring eleven top-quality jazz musicians.

Even after a long and tardy drive from Iowa City, this group was able to swoon the audiece into complacency and, without warning, blow them toward the back of the hall.

Russ Gershen, a saxaphonist who founded the group in 1985, has discovered a new elasticity to the boarders of modern jazz.

“Members of this group have a wide variety of musical background,” Gershen said. “Their experience differs from jazz to rock to Latin to classical. Each member is involved with other bands, which really allows this group to become more diverse.”

Either/Orchestra has certainly transformed the typical jazz band (horns, saxes, and rhythm section) into an explosion of music with the added supporting cast of bassoon, flute, clarinet and a wide variety of organistic sounds.

Presently in search of a record company to release their third album, Either/Orchestra is continuing its Midwest tour and can be seen this Saturday night at the Green Mill, 4802 N. Broadway, Chicago.
