Frat holds alcohol seminar

Members from NIU fraternities and sororities can attend a Greek Alcohol Awareness Seminar tonight to discuss alcohol abuse within the Greek system.

The Sigma Pi Fraternity is sponsoring the event which will begin at 8 p.m. at the Newman Catholic Student Center, 512 Normal Road.

The seminar “is extra information so things that have happened to us (Sigma Pi Fraternity) won’t happen to other fraternities and sororities,” Sigma Pi Fraternity President Bill Baker said.

Sigma Pi Fraternity was suspended last July for serving alcohol to minors, a “Class G” liquor violation, Baker said. Because of the suspension, the fraternity was required to sponsor a series of speakers. However, the Sigma Pi Fraternity met the requirement and sponsored this extra event.

Three guest speakers were invited to attend the event and give input from an outside angle, Baker said. A representative from the InterFraternity Council will begin the seminar with discussion of IFC alcohol guidelines.

DeKalb Police Det. Ron Pearson said he will “spell out laws and rules” regarding alcohol and offer legal, responsible alcohol consumption advice, aimed to eliminate police intervention.

Finally, Greek Adviser Mary Ronan will discuss curbing the misuse and abuse of alcohol within the greek system and how to make non-alcoholic functions successful.

Each fraternity and sorority was asked to send one executive council member, one active member, one pledge and the faculty adviser of each house to the event.

The event is open to anyone, however, it is mostly “greek oriented” and only four members from each fraternity and sorority were invited, Baker said.
