Northern Lights Bookstore gets facelift, new neighbor

The Holmes Center isn’t the only building in DeKalb undergoing a facelift.

The Northern Lights Bookstore has changed its facade and gained a next-door neighbor, Bessamay clothing store. Construction began last May and will be completed in a few weeks. The new building is striking, to say the least_a white Romanesque exterior, complete with pillars and ornate pediments.

Bessamay (“kiss me” in Spanish) has the same owners as Northern Lights and the Keskasay clothing store in DeKalb. It is a store for women, featuring up-to-date, yet simple fashions and lingerie.

Is the clothing selection similar to Keskasay’s? “It has more of the basics_but with style,” said store manager Diane Mulopulos, adding Bessamay’s prices are reasonable. “It’s not outrageous for what it is. Most people come in and say ‘Wow, great prices!'”

Besides basic clothing, Bessamy also features a lingerie section. Mulopulos, who divides her time between Bessamay and Keskasay, said that section comprises about a third of the store. “It was something new to go into,” she said, adding, “People used to come into Keskasay and ask for it, so it was a good idea.”

Mulopulos said she isn’t worried about competition from other women’s stores in DeKalb. “I think everyone, if they’re shoppers, shop everywhere,” she said.

The addition was not a spontaneous decision. “They worked on the design for years, meeting with architects and planning things. They wanted a classical looking building that stands the test of time,” she explained, adding, “I think it’s beautiful.”

The interior of the Northern Lights Bookstore has changed as well. “The point of the expansion was to get more books,” said manager John Mulopulos. “We also wanted to make it more like a reading room, a place to browse.” The Northern Lights has added new shelves, books and large picture windows. “I’d say it’s the most beautiful view in DeKalb. People have really enjoyed it—we wanted to create a comfortable environment,” he added.

Bessamay is open from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Friday, 11 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. on Saturday and noon to 5 p.m. on Sunday.
