Magic samples of the Orient

The Chinese Magic Revue will offer NIU students and their families a breathtaking glimpse into the exotic culture of the Orient this Parents’ Weekend.

The ensemble will perform on Saturday at the Egyptian Theatre. Shows are scheduled for 5 p.m. and 8 p.m. The Chinese Magic Revue is the third attraction brought to DeKalb this semester by NIU’s Fine Art Series.

“We’ve had a tremendous response from both NIU and the DeKalb community. Every performance thus far has sold out and we are optimistic that this trend will continue,” said Series Coordinator Mike Baltasi.

The addition of a second show is unprecedented for the Fine Arts Series, Baltasi said. A 5 p.m. show was scheduled due the quick sell out of the 8 p.m. performance, he said.

Baltasi said the Chinese Magic Revue was chosen because of its highly acclaimed reputation and because it appeals to a wide audience. “Because so many parents and families will be visiting NIU this weekend, this was the perfect opportunity to present a show like this,” he said.

The Chinese Magic Revue has toured worldwide for the past 11 years, spanning locations from as far away as Southeast Asia, Central and South America, Europe, the Middle East and Africa as well as the United States and Canada. Originally from Taiwan, the group is composed of professional performers ranging from 12 to 47 years old.

Although children especially love the show, the acts are far from kid stuff. Each act is a highly refined routine, drawn from centuries of traditions and years of practice by the performers. In fact, most of the acts have been part of Chinese culture for more than 2,000 years.

Tickets for the 5 p.m. show can be purchased at the Carl Sandurg Box Office (753-3148) and also at the Junction Book Room (758-0678). Prices are $5 for NIU students, $8 for senior citizens, and $12 for the general public.
