BSU issues list of demands to officials

The Black Student Union issued a list of demands Friday to NIU and DeKalb officials in response to the Oct. 14 battery of a black NIU student.

The incident, which occurred at the 900 block of Hillcrest Drive, involved five white males, three of which are NIU students. Two of the five individuals allegedly fought with the student over a traffic dispute before the altercation was broken up by a passerby.

The vehicle was located shortly after in a parking lot near the residence halls and two people were taken into custody. They were later released on the advice of the DeKalb State’s Attorney Office after the victim could not positively identify the individuals.

“The color of skin has nothing to do with the investigation,” said DeKalb Police Chief Donald Berke. Berke said the incident was the result of a misunderstanding between the two parties at a four-way traffic stop and was not racially motivated.

In a written statement, the BSU outlined actions it will take to combat the incident including campus patrols, a 24-hour hotline and an escort service, said BSU President Chris O’Banner. The group also demands the “immediate expulsion” of the students involved and a more “active” investigation.

NIU Judicial Office Director Larry Bolles refused to comment on NIU’s actions concerning the expulsion demands.

BSU Vice President Demetricus Carlvin said several campus organizations, including the BSU, B.R.O.T.H.E.R.S. and the Feminist Front, will meet at 9 p.m. tonight in the Visual Arts Building auditorium to discuss NIU administration actions regarding the incident. Bolles and NIU Student Affairs Vice President Barbara Henley will speak at the meeting, Carlvin said.

NIU Legal Counsel George Shur said NIU has the names of the three students allegedly involved. If guilty, the students will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the NIU Student Judicial Code, Shur said.
