Ads set up to fill full-time position

NIU will name a permanent Student Affairs vice president by July 1, and the 13-member search committee will begin with placing advertisements in the Chronicle of Higher Education on Nov. 1 and Nov. 8.

Barbara Henley was named acting vice president for Student Affairs in early August, replacing Jon Dalton. Dalton left NIU in August to accept a similar position at Florida State University in Tallahassee.

Curt Behrens, committee co-chairman and NIU management professor, said the committee met Oct. 16 to finalize advertising copy that includes a job description.

In November, the advertisement will be published in Black Issue in Higher Education and in the Affirmative Action Register, which is “a job bulletin,” Behrens said. Efforts will be made to recruit a minority individual for the position, he said.

The committee will meet again in mid-November to discuss specific screening criteria, Behrens said. “The size of narrowing the pool applicants has not been determined,” he said. The type of doctorate degree an applicant should have is another screening criteria which the committee will discuss by mid-November, he said.

The advertisement states that candidates should have a doctorate degree, managerial experience in higher education student affairs, leadership experience and a commitment to affirmative action and the creation of a positive campus environment.

NIU’s vice president for Student Affairs is responsible for all NIU functions not related to academic or business affairs. The Student Affairs office includes: University Programming and Activities, Student Housing, Student Financial Aid, the Counseling and Student Development Center, the Office of Campus Recreation, Career Planning and Placement, Judicial Office, University Health Service and Campus Child Care.

Behrens said the directors of these offices were contacted for recommendations of qualified candidates to recruit for the position.

The advertisement states the deadline for receipt of nominations is Nov. 20. The deadline of receipt of completed applications is Dec. 1. Behrens said he hopes applications are in before winter break so interviews can start in the spring semester.

References will be asked (for) after the pool has been narrowed,” Behrens said. Candidates will be interviewed on campus once the field is narrowed, he said.
